Music is therapy. Music moves people. It connects people in ways that no other medium can. It pulls heart strings. It acts as medicine.

-Macklemore

I am going to share three songs I think send an important message about life.

This post originally started out as being ten songs that can change my mind-set. As I was listening to my ‘chosen’ ten, I realised there were three that stood out to me. I started to think “if I live my life remembering the message these three songs give, things will be easier whatever comes my way”. Naturally, I want to share this with you.

I’ve said before, to live our happiest lives, it’s key we acknowledge that we are all in this together. Life can give us the highest highs and the lowest lows. No matter how content your life is, you can still wake up in a funny mood, not quite feeling yourself today, and feeling too afraid to show up and live your best life.

Our emotions change all throughout the day, we just go with it, not really acknowledging our own role in the way we feel.

One of the best gifts you can give yourself is to start normalising your feelings. To notice them, to not judge yourself for them or let them hold you back. Just noticing that they are a normal part of this crazy thing we call life.

Either consciously or unconsciously, people often use music as a form of therapy. Music has the ability to enhance or change the emotion you are experiencing – like magic. (I mean it feels like magic, but I think there is real science in it actually.)

Personally, I am all about the lyrics. Lyrics are the reminder that other people have had similar experiences to you, good and bad.

I have picked three songs I can listen to in any mood. If we all remembered the words to these songs, life might just be that bit easier when tough times do come around.

I don’t necessarily mean listening to the song will fix everything, but rather, letting the songs influence your mindset can help. Even if just a little bit.

You might be shocked that of all the songs in the world, this is what I have gone for, but I really do believe they share an invaluable message.

1, Shawn Mendes – A Little Too Much.

This is for the low mood, something feels off and you’re not even sure why. Perhaps you feel like you are alone and no one gets it. Life is tough but you’re telling yourself you should be happy because all in all – you have lots of good things in your life and people are so much worse off, but the fact is, on this day you feel a little off.

Those days are not so hard when you approach them with a calmer attitude, acknowledging your mood, knowing you will be OK and that this day will pass.

I simply cannot believe a…*googles Shawn Mendes*…NINETEEN(!!) year old guy wrote this song. This song honestly sums up one of the main messages we need to spread. We all get down, it is part of life. You can have days where it just feels too much. Don’t give up, don’t be so hard on yourself. Don’t think you are failing at life. You’re not, this happens to everyone.

OK if you listen to this song you might question how it can help a sad mood. Granted, it does sound a bit on the sad side itself, so if that’s not for you, simply remember the words.

I haven’t known of this song for long. It came on a random playlist on a very day I needed it, it was the day that lead to my blog post ‘10 Tips to Help Get You Through a Hard Day’ which you can read here.

Sometimes it all gets a little too much

But you gotta realise that soon the fog will clear up

And you don’t have to be afraid, because we’re all the same

And we know that sometimes it all gets a little too much

Listen to this song even when you’re not having a hard time, it means when the hard day does come, you are better prepared.

2, Alanis Morissette – You Learn

OK, when picking these songs, I wanted to share songs that I truly think send an important message. I wanted to be sure I am picking this song because it truly is a message to share, rather than the fact Alanis is just a queen. I can confirm this is a song we all need in our lives.

This song is one for when something crappy is going on or has gone on. Perhaps you made a ‘bad’ decision or life took a turn that you weren’t down with, but there’s nothing you can do. This song is delivering the message that some of life’s greatest lessons come from these moments. You might not see it at the time. Be patient and look deep, the lesson is there. In many cases, a new, exciting door has opened.

We can cope a little better with these situations when we accept it for the valuable lesson that it is. No matter how big or small. If you choose to accept the lesson, it can lead to you being a better version of yourself before the change occurred.

 Wait until the dust settles

You live you learn, you love you learn

You cry you learn, you lose you learn

You bleed you learn, you scream you learn

Whenever I get lost in a situation, overthinking, worrying or wondering why life has happened this way, this song goes on and it all makes sense. Whether I see the lesson or not, I know it’s there, and I will see it when the smoke clears.

3, Natasha Bedingfield – Unwritten

In the fast paced, anxious culture we live in, it’s often hard to just relax and enjoy life in the moment.

Everyone wants to control their lives and the outcome, whether it be careers, relationships, or how they look. The idea of an unwritten future is scary and people tense up at the very thought of uncertainty. It’s a world of comparing yourself to the person next to you and sadly in many cases, not supporting each other. It doesn’t always feel like a world where people are living with arms wide open.

This song lifts.me.up. It motivates me to live my own life my way and to enjoy it. It is simply telling you that you hold the key to your life, this is your book and your decisions are the ones that can move you in the direction you want. And the best bit – it’s OK to make mistakes.

It also brings me into the moment, leaves all the crap behind, ready to start again, today.

I absolutely love the line ‘Live your life with arms wide open’ it helps me consider any resentment and/or anger that I might be holding on to and reminds me to let that go, open up and seize any opportunity.

Release your inhibitions

Feel the rain on your skin

No one else can feel it for you

No one else, no one else

Can speak the words on your lips

Live your life with arms wide open

Today is where your book begins

So there they are. I’ve got no doubt people are going to disagree with these choices or tell me a song that I wish I had remembered. I’m so keen to hear what songs you would pick so be sure to let me know by leaving a comment below.
